Can't-Wait Wednesday: What the Woods Took by Courtney Gould & Wind and Truth (The Stormlight Archives #5) by Brandon Sanderson

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

What the Woods Took by Courtney Gould
Publication: December 10th, 2024
Wednesday Books
Hardcover. 336 pages.
Pre-order: Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"Yellowjackets meets Girl, Interrupted when a group of troubled teens in a wilderness therapy program find themselves stranded in a forest full of monsters eager to take their place.

Devin Green wakes in the middle of the night to find two men in her bedroom. No stranger to a fight, she calls to her foster parents for help, but it soon becomes clear this is a planned abduction—one everyone but Devin signed up for. She’s shoved in a van and driven deep into the Idaho woods, where she’s dropped off with a cohort of equally confused teens. Finally, two camp counselors inform them that they've all been enrolled in an experimental therapy program. If the campers can learn to change their self-destructive ways—and survive a fifty-days hike through the wilderness—they’ll come out the other side as better versions of themselves. Or so the counselors say.

Devin is immediately determined to escape. She’s also determined to ignore Sheridan, the cruel-mouthed, lavender-haired bully who mocks every group exercise. But there’s something strange about these woods—inhuman faces appearing between the trees, visions of people who shouldn't be there flashing in the leaves—and when the campers wake up to find both counselors missing, therapy becomes the least of their problems. Stranded and left to fend for themselves, the teens quickly realize they’ll have to trust each other if they want to survive. But what lies in the woods may not be as dangerous as what the campers are hiding from each other—and if the monsters have their way, no one will leave the woods alive.

Atmospheric and sharp, What the Woods Took is a poignant story of transformation that explores the price of becoming someone—or something—new.
"

I am very intrigued by this premise, as I always enjoy a good survival story that also relies heavily on human relationships and interactions. Hopefully it's a little bit spooky, also!

Wind and Truth (The Stormlight Archives #5) by Brandon Sanderson
Publication: December 6th, 2024
Tor Books
Hardcover. 1344 pages.
Pre-order: Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive―the iconic epic fantasy masterpiece that has sold more than 10 million copies, from acclaimed bestselling author Brandon Sanderson.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare―and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide―Adolin in Azimir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah at Thaylen City. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiants killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.
"

I'm sure many people are anxiously awaiting this release! I am honestly in quite a desperate need for a recap of the first four books, though, as a re-read is a bit out of the question given the size of these dang books and my memory is a bit hazy on some things, haha.

The Friday Face-Off: Windswept

Friday Face Off New
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme at Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in our literary universe.  You can find a list of upcoming topics at Lynn's Books.

This week's topic is:
Windswept

As soon as I saw the topic 'windswept,' I immediately thought of The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. What's a more classic, windswept traditional SFF cover than that? Let's take a look at some of the other covers of The Way of Kings that exist! There are a lot, so I included a lot because I thought they were really fun and creative.

The Friday Face-Off: Aerial Encounter

Friday Face Off New
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme at Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in our literary universe. You can find a list of upcoming topics at Lynn's Books.

This week's topic is:
Aerial Encounter - spaceships & explosions

There were a few options that fit this week's topic, so I've included a few covers of Children of Time  by Adrian Tchaikovsky and Adrift by Rob Boffard to cover the spaceship aspect and The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson for the explosion-looking aspect. I never would've really classified The Rithmatist as sci-fi, but those covers in particular sure look space-y!

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Children of Time (Children of Time, #1)Copiii timpuluiDeca Vremena
2015 US | 2018 Romanian | 2018 Serbian

I'm really drawn to the Serbian edition of Children of Time, but overall I really love the looks of these two covers and the striking color contrasts and just how beautiful they are overall!

Waiting on Wednesday: Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson
Publication Date: November 14th, 2017

From Goodreads:

"The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Words of Radiance, from an epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game.

In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Timesbestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization."

I can't believe it's finally time for the third book in The Stormlight Archive to be out! I fell in love with this series as soon as I began the first book and blew through them both back in 2014. The wait is absolutely worth it for this series, though. Also, the first 250 pages are being released in increments on Tor up to the date of Oathbringer's release if you want to go get a head start! Who else is excited for this one?

What do you think about this upcoming release? What are your anticipated upcoming releases?
