Long-time collaborators Dave De Rose & Dan Nicholls (Agile Experiments / Free Movements / Vula Viel) celebrate the release of their duo LP ‘plants heal’ on this LJF night. Channelling their love for dance and electronic music they immerse themselves into completely improvised live sets with meditative abandonment, delivering passionate sonics and abstractions in rhythm. Emerging from their separate paths these masterful underdogs of the London jazz scene synchronise, deepening into awareness, reaching for emotive and natural connections to sound making, showcasing impressionistic, gritty and textural musical statements.

Dave De Rose is an Anglo-Italian multi-instrumentalist, producer based in London who has in recent years begun to build a reputation for fearless sonic explorations of freely improvised jazz-related music absorbing sound-art in a blend with an audacious and original approach to grooves. He has self-released 21 records on his own label (Dave De Rose Records), whilst having toured & recorded with artists such as Electric Jalaba, Moloko, Roisin Murphy, Bastille, Mark Ronson & The Business International, Mulatu Astatke, Rokia Traore, Jamie Cullum, Scroobius Pip, Raul Monsalve y los Forajidos, Forest Binary, Vula Viel and Trio Trekke.
His recent project, Agile Experiments, has caught the imaginations of musicians and the underground experimental jazz community world-wide, receiving reviews, praise and support from The Wire, BBC Radio Freeness, Bandcamp ‘new and notable’ & ‘record of the day’, Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, Jazz Journal, NTS, Music Is My Sanctuary, UK Vibe, MusicMap, The Jazzmann, Jazz Views, Mafalda, Chris Menist, Colectivo Futuro, and Alan Mckinnon.

Dan Nicholls: After years of unlearning and unravelling the knots of a music college education – moving from a career in jazz, via electronic music, to a heartfelt embrace with rave culture and the feminist and queer theories which have so challenged perspectives across many disciplines on the objectified world and the values of capitalism – Dan Nicholls has developed an expansive and deeply entangled practice in the field of sound.
Casting aside the dogma and seriousness of much artistic practice whilst embracing joy and improvisation in order to search for deeper narratives, Nicholls’ work finds depth and form through quick experimentation and distillation – layering, stretching and collaging sound, and diffracting materials from many places, sonic and otherwise.
As a performer who has worked at venues as disparate as London’s Royal Festival Hall and Berghain in Berlin, from the smallest experimental music clubs to the largest international festivals of jazz and new music, Dan finds threads which can interweave between many worlds. He has worked with icons of electronic music such as Squarepusher, Goldie and Matthew Herbert, to prominent figures in the European jazz and improvised music scenes, to deep collaborations with dance, film and visual art. This collaborative album with De Rose follows an acclaimed solo record release earlier this year on the seminal We Jazz Records.
