Keiron Phelan & Peace Signs + Papernut Cambridge + James Stringer

Peace Signs is the newest project from Keiron Phelan, best known as founder of cult millennial post rockers State River Widening, for the bright Chagall pop of Anglo-Japanese outfit Smile Down Upon Us and the Debussy infused neo-classicisms of littlebow. Peace Signs are a Slapp Happy and Hunky Dory kind of band; Phelan vocalising like a non-dozy Kevin Ayers with hints of both Bolanesque willfulness and Bill Fay sincerity. Imagine a confrontational Neil Hannon fronting the Incredible String Band and you’re on the right protest march. Peace out’

“Bristling with all-star, outré, indie talent, Peace Signs are as witty as they are charming, as wry as they are inventive” – Shindig! (5 star review) Peace Signs debut album, Nov. 2018.

Papernut Cambridge is the London/Kent based pop collective led by Ian Button, former guitarist for Death In Vegas and Thrashing Doves. The Papernuts’ live and recording line up is an ever-fluid band of interconnected indie collaborators, and the band’s album releases since 2013 take pastoral psych, 60’s/70’s pop, indie and Motown influences and weave them into hooky layered pop tunes with smarts and atmospherics. They are unashamedly retro, proudly suburban and often casually ‘meta’ about the whole art form of music making.

To further raise the eclecticism stakes this evening also features two interludes of Late Romantic and Minimalist piano pieces performed by James Stringer.
