A.S. Fanning
Sad House Daddy presents A.S. Fanning & band launching his third album, “Mushroom Cloud” live at London’s Servant Jazz Quarters with support from Louis Brennan.
Dublin-born, Berlin-based gothic folk singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist A.S. Fanning’s songs are often lyrically driven, taking inspiration from Irish literary tradition and folk music as well as from ’60s psychedelia and rock ‘n’ roll. He began this solo project in 2013 after the breakup of his former band, The Last Tycoons. Self-produced debut album ”Second Life” was released in 2017 on Proper Octopus Records, the same year Fanning performed at Austin’s prestigious SXSW festival. Sophomore album “You Should Go Mad” was released in November 2020, receiving support and high praise from BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, The Sunday Times (“rich and expressive”) and Clash magazine (“the sound of an artist pushing himself to the brink”). Forthcoming third album “Mushroom Cloud” is out on May 26th 2023, released on K&F Records / Proper Octopus. The album features contributions from Bernardo Sousa on electric guitar, Felix Buchner on bass, Dave Adams on synth & piano, Jeff Collier on drums, Martin Lorenz on timpani & percussion and the Oriel Quartett performing the string parts, which were arranged Irene Buckley. The title track was released on March 22nd as its first single, described by Backseat Mafia as “a theatrical tour de force” and named a Track of the Day by Hot Press magazine.
“An emotional joyride with songs of devotion and endured heartache” – The 405
London-based Dubliner Louis Brennan is a singer-songwriter in the folk tradition. His folk however aren’t the field hands and travelling minstrels of yore but the repressed middle managers and ennui-ridden urbanites of late-stage capitalism. They populate tales of bad sex, half-drunk commutes and interpersonal claustrophobia delivered in Brennan’s cracked baritone, at times embarrassingly intimate, at times spuriously broad, peppered with pitch-black humour. His 2018 album “Dead Capital” was recorded at Berlin’s Candybomber Studio, located in the now-defunct Tempelhof Airport. Produced alongside acclaimed Irish songwriter A.S. Fanning and legendary engineer Ingo Krauss. He decamped to the legendary Rockfield Studios in the Welsh countryside with a stellar cast of musicians to work on its follow-up album, last year’s “Love Island” (described by Americana UK as “a powerful album… outstanding songs superbly sung and played”).
