Habibi Collective

Habibi Collective has partnered with Servant Jazz Quarters to bring you a night of music featuring Disco Arabesquo and Majazz Project.

Moataz Rageb also known as ‘Disco Arabesquo’. Sociologist, DJ, researcher and collector of Arabic cassettes and vinyl. He specializes in Arabic-Western cross-over sounds that portray ‘a splash of civilizations’ and a creative generation searching for a new identity. He will take you back to the sounds of the 80’s & 90’s Arabic Middle-East and North Africa. You will hear the voices of Fairouz, Mohamed Mounir, Simone, Cheb Khaled, Faried el Attrache, Hamied el Shaeri and many of their friends.

Majazz Project is a record label and research platform based between Palestine and London borne out of and inspired by vintage Arab sounds.

Majazz Project has amassed a huge collection of rare tapes and vinyl from the Middle East and North Africa, spanning everything from field recordings of weddings to synth-heavy 80s funk.

It is built out of creative collaboration between Arab and non-Arab DJs, producers and artists interested in shedding new light on the richness and diversity of Arabic musical heritage.

Majazz Project recently released their first reissue, Riad Awwad’s The Intifada 1987 (available through Bandcamp) and has a show on NTS Radio. They programme regular parties at Servant Jazz Quarters and Finch Café, where they also have a pop up store selling Arab and global vinyl.

Habibi Collective is an open-access resource for women’s filmmaking from south-west Asia and North Africa, digitally archived on Instagram. With a bank of over 500 films from women filmmakers in the MENA region and diaspora, the Collective regularly screens films with speciality in moving-image and essay film. Creating a space for female MENA filmmaking where there previously was none, Habibi Collective quickly grew into an international community now with over 24k followers.
